Updates

Jan 16th, 2005 - Our Donations Page Has continued to receive donations towards our project. This is much appreciated and will certainly help us gain ground. We have received emails from many fans who can't afford to donate and we certainly appreciate that. With all the tragedies around the globe, our project pales in comparison. We do appreciate ALL support we get. Thanks again.

This week we have a few people we are speaking with that may consider funding part of our project. I hope to have an update soon.

Dec 30th, 2004 - Donations Page Created. Links to Adventure Games Sites added!

Dec 29th, 2004 - Wow....its been a while

Over the past 18 months (maybe longer) I have struggled to find a publisher interested in developing my game. I have received emails from hundreds asking about it. In most cases, I sent out personal notes explaining what was happening. So here is a quick recap:

1) I have not had any luck getting a publisher based on the fact that I would like to develop the game in Canada or the US. About 95% of the adventure computer games being developed are being developed overseas where labor costs are significantly cheaper. I spent 2 years working with DreamCatcher / The Adventure Company and many development houses they used and still use are overseas. Personally it would be tough for me to try the long distance thing. I want to work with North American publishers and developers.

2) I have spent about 4 years of my time writing and developing the story for either a book, game or online novel series. I also spent about $40,000 USD in development costs so far. Because I am raising a family myself and developing my ongoing web development company, I wasn't able to spend more at this time.

3) Many publishers require a playable demo and major decisions need to be made in terms of technology used, platform the game is designed for. Games like Eldoren are not console friendly in that Microsoft and Sony tend to support major licences and games that are more action based.

4) Its a competitive market and its extremely risky to launch a console game or PC game. Few make back what it costs to build them. Sadly.

So.....

Over the past 3 months, I started looking at alternative methods of sharing the story. I wanted to get more out and share more of the story. The challenge is that if I share certain aspects of the story and plot, it kills my chances of EVER making this story a game. But, as I have found, getting it to game stage might never happen. I considered publishing the books and simply hoping that it might catch the attention of fantasy / sci-fi fans and promote more sales (thus funding more books). Again, if I publish the books, it kills the chance of games.

The last option I had was to simply release parts of the story and books online and release a bunch of the artwork so that people could see just how developed the story was.

In early December (2004), I sat down one night and reread ALL my notes, diagrams, maps, artwork, story, plotlines, character development and realized I could add more. I could continue to develop. The original story was solid and much more detailed for a game than most games I have played. I always wanted a solid story that got peoples attention. And the best part was there were areas in the story that could be developed so much further.

Over the next few days, I am going to review my plot lines and update the STORY page to reflect more detail in the books. That will at least give some people a sense of what is contained in the 3 books (Secret Info - a 4th book is in the works). I will also add some more concept artwork and share more images. I plan to also add some more downloads (wallpapers). I fully realize that this doesn't makes sense given I am not alot closer to launching, but the artwork is spectacular in my mind and I would love to share some more.

Frequently Asked Questions will also be updated in early January 2005.

Last thoughts for tonight...I am incuring minor costs each month in postage, sending out letters, developing artwork and materials to share with people. I have considered adding a donation button on the site to allow hardcore adventure fans an opportunity to help me cover some costs. I don't have much more savings I can dump in at this time but I figured maybe taking a small donation from fans might help me get the game out sooner. My plan was to offer 3 plans: (a) Bronze donation of $5 USD. (b) a Silver donation of $10 USD and a Gold donation of $25 USD. Each gold donation would provide the giver a signed, printed image from the concept art. Lastly, I would also consider a $50 donation and this would include a signed print ( as above ) and I would also recognize the person donating by including their name as a credit in the future game/ book and possibly add their name in one of the journals in the story. People playing the game could discover their name amongst the rich story of the game. Call it an personalized easter egg in Eldoren: The Discovery!

More on the site will be updated the week of December 30th - January 4th, 2004. My humblest apologies for the long delay. I was frustrated and disheartened by the fact I could not have a game publisher deal complete. So now it's time to move on and take other directions. Watch the site for more updates this week.

Here are some "past" highlights (currently updating Dec 29-2004):

  • The Plot is complete and the story / character / gameplay are pretty much scoped out.

  • Puzzle Development is underway and many of the initial designs and ideas have been assembled. We haven't finalized these as we want to work with a publisher and get their valued input. You can expect lots of stone, steel, water and rope. Its going to be a blast. We are working on providing over 30+ hours of puzzle solving. Maybe more....

  • Game Engine - this is interesting as some recent new technology updates have us looking at a few different engines. Obviously the primary choices are a 2D nodal based format or a full 3D realtime format. Watch for updates on this.

  • Music for ELDOREN - Book One: The Discovery has been composed by musician/composer Michael Penner. We will be offering some sample tracks in MP3 format for your listening pleasure. These tracks are from Michael's CD entitled THE SUNROOM.

  • A 30 min video presentation is being produced about the game, the story, graphics and development. Dates for release have not been finalized ( we want to make getting a publisher agreement in place a priority ).

You are but a prince, not yet a King. Against the ruthless stranger and his drak brethern. And for those who may never come here, who will never know this city and its hidden secrets. They warned us of this menace. Have we not forgotten?
